Antoni Paweł Sułkowski (German Anton Paul Fürst Sulkowski ; born December 31, 1785 in Leszno ; † April 13, 1836 in Rydzyna ) was a Polish general in the service of Napoleon , the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland and from 1824 Prussian State Councilor .

Life

He came from the Polish royal family Sułkowski and was the son of Prince Anton Sulkowski. The mother Karolina came from the Bohemian noble family Bubna and Lititz . He studied in Breslau and Göttingen . He was married to Eva (née Countess von Kicka). The marriage resulted in the son Prince August Anton and four daughters. He was the owner of the Rydzyna ordination and Leszno County.

In 1806, after the defeat of Prussia, he entered the service of Napoleon and the Duchy of Warsaw. He formed the 1st Polish Infantry Regiment with the rank of colonel. He distinguished himself during the sieges of Kolberg and Danzig and was promoted to brigadier general. From 1808 to 1810 he served in Spain and has also proven himself militarily there. Such was the case in the defense of Toledo , in the battles of Almonacid and Ocassa. At times he was governor of Malaga . In 1810 he returned to the Duchy of Warsaw.

During the Russian campaign , Sulkowski led a light cavalry brigade of the 5th Corps under Josef Anton Poniatowski and was seriously wounded on October 18 of that year. He was promoted to division general. In the Battle of Leipzig he led a mobile corps and fought at the head of a cavalry brigade. After Poniatowski's death, he became the commander of the Polish troops. With these he took part in the retreat fights. At Fulda there was a conflict with Napoleon. Sulkowski had promised the Polish soldiers that they would be returned to Poland. Napoleon persuaded the remaining officers to stay with the French army with the troops. Thereupon Sulkowski resigned the supreme command and returned to Poland.

There he played a leading role in the reorganization of the Polish army with the rank of lieutenant general. He became adjutant general to Tsar Alexander I. In 1816 he resigned from active military service. He moved the center of his life to the Prussian part of Poland. There he became Land Marshal of the first Provincial Parliament of Posen in 1824 and a member of the Prussian State Council.
