Franciszek Turek (born April 1, 1882 in Kraków , Austria-Hungary ; died 1947 in Kraków) was a Polish painter, educator, and art activist. He is known for his watercolors of contemporary and past Krakow.

Life

Turek graduated from the State Industrial School in Cracow in 1902 (Polish: "Państwowa Szkoła Przemysłowa w Krakowie"). He then studied under Józef Mehoffer , Józef Unierzyski and Leon Wyczółkowski at the Cracow School of Art , and also attended classes with Stanisław Wyspiański .

Turek was a board member of the Society of Friends of History and Monuments of the City of Krakow (Polish: "Towarzystwo Miłośników Historii i Zabytków Krakowa") and co-founder of the General Association of Artists (Polish: "Związek Powszechny Artystów Plastyków"). During the First World War he was a member of a unit that was supposed to protect Krakow's art treasures, from 1914 to 1916 he headed this unit. From 1922 to 1928 he taught women painting, including at Baraniecki's seminar for women in Krakow.

Turek mainly painted watercolors. Preferred motifs were city views of Krakow and individual buildings or monuments. Many of his works were created in the Jewish quarter of Kazimierz . He also painted buildings that no longer existed. Landscapes, flowers and nudes were also created. Works by him can be found in the National Museums in Krakow and Warsaw and in the possession of the National Bank of Poland .

A larger exhibition of his works on the Kraków district of Kazimierz was shown in October 2001 in the Kraków Center for Jewish Culture .
