François Benda

François Benda (* 1964 in Brazil ) is a clarinetist and clarinet teacher.

Origin and education

He was born in 1964 in Brazil as the son of the pianist Sebastian Benda and the pianist Luzia Dias Benda. He comes from the traditional family of musicians Benda . He completed his studies in Graz and Geneva (clarinet, composition, conducting) and made his solo debut in 1988 at the Tonhalle Zürich and the Victoria Hall Geneva. In 1991 François Benda was awarded the Premio internationale per le Arti dello Spettaccolo in Rome.

Concert activity

Today, François Benda performs in all major music centers (Berlin Philharmonic, Musikverein Vienna, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall London, Tonhalle Zurich) and plays as a soloist with the major orchestras (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Basel Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Chamber Philharmonic) . As a soloist as well as a sought-after chamber musician, François Benda is a regular guest at important music festivals (Berliner Festwochen, Styriarte, Musicades Lyon, Ittingen Whitsun Concerts).

His chamber music partners include Heinz Holliger , Paul Badura-Skoda , Bruno Giuranna, Isabelle Faust , Josef Silverstein and Bruno Canino. But he also works with members of his family like Christian Benda or Nancy Benda. His discography includes a. the clarinet concertos by Carl August Nielsen , Claude Debussy , Ferruccio Busoni and Gioachino Rossini . François Benda manages the balancing act between classical repertoire and contemporary music both as a clarinetist (important composers have written works for him, including Georg Friedrich Haas , Wolfgang von Schweinitz , Bernhard Lang , which he premiered) and as a conductor, which he has done in the recent past always more busy.

Suggestion for clarinet making

François Benda's intensive preoccupation with the development of instrument making resulted in the establishment of the Clarinartis company in collaboration with the instrument makers René Hagmann and Jochen Seggelke. Teaching

In addition to his solo activity, François Benda holds a professorship at the Berlin University of the Arts and teaches at the University of Music in Basel.
