Frank Alden Bovey

Frank Alden Bovey (born June 4, 1918 in Minneapolis , † January 19, 2003 ) was an American chemist who dealt with polymer chemistry .

Bovey studied at Harvard University and worked from 1943 at the National Synthetic Rubber Corporation, a state-supported consortium. During the Second World War he worked there on synthetic rubber in the group of Izaak Kolthoff , where he received his doctorate in 1948 on the subject of The mechanism of the emulsion polymerization of styrene . He then spent fourteen years at 3 M Company, where he led polymer research and pioneered the introduction of NMR techniques into polymer research. In 1962 he moved to Bell Laboratories , where he stayed for 30 years until his retirement.

In 1978 he received the William H. Nichols Medal , in 1969 the Polymer Chemistry Award of the ACS , in 1974 the High-Polymer Physics Award of the American Physical Society , of which he was a fellow, in 1991 the Carothers Award and in 1991 the silver medal of the Japanese Polymer Society. In 1975 he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences .

He was co-editor of the Macromolecules magazine.
