Frank Gant

Frank Gant (* 26. May 1931 in Detroit ) is an American drummer of modern jazz .

Gant had learned from and spoken to Art Blakey while attending concerts in Detroit . He made his first appearances with Billy Mitchell and Pepper Adams ; after working with Little John Wilson and his Merry Men at the Madison Ballroom , where he occasionally accompanied Billie Holiday , he joined Alvin Jackson. In 1955 he worked on the debut album of trumpeter Donald Byrd with ( First Flight ), in 1958 that of Barry Harris . In the late 1950s he worked in Yusef Lateef's band ( Cry! Tender ). Around 1970 he was a member of the pianist Ahmad Jamal's trio for Impulse! Records recorded the albums At the Top - Poinciana Revisited , The Awakening and Freeflight . In 1992 he played in the trio of Ronnie Mathews ( Lament for Love ). Gant also worked with Red Garland , Monty Alexander / Ernestine Anderson and Al Haig (1977). Between 1955 and 2001 he took part in the recordings for 53 albums.
