Frank Neuschulz

Frank Neuschulz (born May 19, 1954 in Lüchow ; † August 27, 2008 in Windhoek ) was a German ornithologist and conservationist . Since 1993 he has been head of the Elbe-Brandenburg river landscape biosphere reserve and since 2005 head of nature conservation at Deutsche Umwelthilfe .

Life

Neuschulz grew up on the edge of the Elbe valley in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district . He was already interested in ornithology when he was still at school, was involved in the Lüchow-Dannenberg avifaunistic working group and published several settlement density studies and regional monographs.

He studied biology in Basel and Hamburg and has been working as a biological expert since 1980. As part of his dissertation , published in 1988, he examined the synoecia between the sparrowhawk warbler and the red-backed killer on two test areas in Lüchow-Dannenberg . This work was awarded the Werner Sunkel Prize of the German Ornithological Society in 1989. In 1986 and 1989 Neuschulz self-published an illustrated book about the Elbe Valley, to which he also contributed numerous photographs. In the Stupid lowland he headed since 1990 for the BUND a project to protect wetlands, which is funded among others by selling "herbal and quality hay."

Since the opening of the inner-German border, Neuschulz has been committed to cross-border nature conservation in the area of ​​the Elbe and initiated the idea of ​​an Elbe National Park. This was finally implemented in the form of the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve . Since 1993 he has been employed by the State Agency for Large Protected Areas of the State of Brandenburg and headed the administration of the Brandenburg part - the Elbe-Brandenburg River Landscape Biosphere Reserve.

In 2005, Neuschulz moved to Deutsche Umwelthilfe, where he headed the nature conservation department and was primarily committed to the preservation and renaturation of German river landscapes.

In August 2008 he died unexpectedly while on a trip to Namibia . He left a wife and two daughters.
