Francis Duncan O'Flynn , BA , LLB , LLM , QC (born October 24, 1918 in Greymouth , New Zealand - † October 17, 2003 in New Zealand),knownpublicly as Frank O'Flynn , was a New Zealand lawyer , politician of the New Zealand Labor Party and Secretary of Defense in the government of David Lange .

Life

Francis Duncan O'Flynn was born on October 24, 1918 as the first of three children to Francis Edward O'Flynn and Margaret Helen Valentine Duncan in Greymouth , on the west coast of the South Island . Both parents were teachers at the Runanga School in the small town of Runanga , a few kilometers north of Greymouth and his father ran the school. In 1922 the family moved to Christchurch, where his father got a job as headmaster.

O'Flynn attended District High School in Christchurch in 1931 and later the Boys' High School in the city from 1932 to 1935 . When his mother died in 1937 and the family moved to Wellington , O'Flynn was just under 19 years old. In Wellington he attended Victoria University part-time , worked in the then Education Department and from 1939 as an employee of the Wellington Laborers' Union Secretary . In 1940 he completed his first part of his studies with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1942 went to the Royal New Zealand Air Force for which he was appointed captain of the air forces in the Pacific region.

After the end of World War II , O'Flynn found a job with a law firm in Wellington and continued his pre-war law studies . In 1947 he completed his studies with a Bachelor of Laws and a year later with a Master of Laws . He then practiced in Wellington as a barrister and solicitor until 1968 when he was appointed Queen's Counsel .

In 1972 he gave up the position of Queen's Counsel for his political commitment and successfully ran for a seat in the New Zealand parliament for the constituency of Kapiti , but lost it again three years later. Back to his job, he took on the position of editor for the journal New Zealand Law Reports . In 1978 O'Flynn ran again for a seat in parliament, this time for the Island Bay constituency , won it and remained in parliament until 1987. When Labor won the election in 1984, he took over the ministerial post in the government of David Lange

As Minister of Defense, he was involved in New Zealand's nuclear-free zone policy .

O'Flynn left the parliamentary stage for health reasons in 1987 and had to deal with a stroke in the following years , from which he was able to recover.

Francis Duncan O'Flynn died on October 17, 2003.

In 1942, O'Flynn married Sylvia Elizabeth Hefford , with whom he had four children.
