In 1828 the slave traders Isaac Franklin and John Armfield founded a business there that was considered one of the largest and most successful slave trading companies of the time. During the most successful business times in the 1830s, between 1,000 and 1,200 slaves were sold annually and transported from Alexandria, Virginia to New Orleans , among other places . In 1836 the building was sold to another slave trader. From 1858 until the occupation of Alexandria by Union troops in the American Civil War in 1861, the slave trading company Price, Birch & Co. was located here . Afterwards, the building served as a prison for captured soldiers of the Confederate States and from 1878 to 1885 as a hospital. In June 1978, the Franklin and Armfield Office was listed as a building on the National Register of Historic Places and was granted National Historic Landmark status, making it one of 121 of its kind in Virginia.
