Frans Mortelmans (born May 1, 1865 in Antwerp ; † April 11, 1936 there ) was a Belgian painter who mainly painted flowers and still lifes .

biography

Frans Mortelmans was the first son of the Antwerp printer Karel Mortelmans and his wife Isabella . The musician and composer painter Lodewijk Mortelmans was one of his five siblings . Frans was supposed to learn the piano, but his brother Lodewijk played it while he took his drawing lessons.

Mortelmans was a member of the artist group “De Scalden”. In addition to Antwerp, he exhibited his pictures in Mechelen , Ghent and Liège and also sold them abroad. In 1903, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in his hometown was the first to acquire one of his watercolors.

He himself taught as a professor at the academy in Antwerp's Berchem district and was most recently deputy director there. He died childless.
