František Slavík

František Slavík (born August 18, 1876 in Kutná Hora , Bohemia, † January 27, 1957 in Prague ) was a Czech mineralogist and geologist.

František Slavík was born as the son of the historian František Augustin Slavík in Kutná Hora. In 1895 he began studying natural sciences, chemistry and physics at Charles University in Prague . Later he also began studies in zoology, botany, geology and mineralogy. Among others, Karel Vrba and Jindřich Barvíř were his teachers. In chemistry attended the lectures by Karel Preis and Bohumil Brauner . In the second year he became an assistant at Vrba.

In 1899 he wrote his dissertation, which mainly dealt with oil drilling. From 1901 to 1902 he studied crystallography in Munich with Paul Heinrich von Groth and Ernst Weinschenk .

Slavík began in 1905 as a lecturer at the Charles University, in 1910 as an assistant professor and in 1916 as a professor and director of the mineralogical institute of the Charles University. In the years 1907–1916 he also worked at the Technical University in Prague at the same time .

In 1937 he became rector of the Charles University. Slavík, who also spoke numerous foreign languages, also regularly took part in foreign congresses.

The occupation of Prague by the Germans interrupted his work at the university. With his two students František Ulrich and Radim Nováček he joined the resistance. His institute was closed and the Institute for Racial Studies was established. However, like his wife, they were arrested by the Gestapo and taken to concentration camps.

As the only survivor, he was able to resume his lectures in 1947 and continued them until his death.

Honors and memberships

He was a full member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences . He became a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy . In 1946 he received an honorary doctorate from Charles University.

A new mineral described by Rudolf Jirkovský and František Ulrich in 1926 was named Slavíkite in his honor .
