Františkánske námestie (German Franziskanerplatz ) is a square in the Slovak capital Bratislava , within the historic city center . It is elongated in north-south direction and opens into Františkánska Street at the top, Biela Street at the west end and Main Square at the south end .

The square is named after the Franciscan monastery on the east side. A modern new building to the south of it, a town house and the Jesuit church as well as the Franciscan church located on the northeast corner of the square are on the east side of the square. On the north-west corner you will find the Mirbach Palace , which houses the Bratislava City Gallery , and town houses on the west side. In front of the entrance to the Jesuit Church there is a Marian column from 1675, not far from it is a sculpture of a woman with a vessel from 1804. There was a Renaissance fountain from 1592 and even earlier a fool’s house , which was used for the first time 1567 when Newes Fool kheterlein was mentioned at the Brotmarkht .

history

The square was originally a unit with today's main square, which was then called the ring. Mainly the bread and fish market ( forum piscium ) was located at today's location . It was only after the markets had moved to today's Slovak National Uprising Square in the 18th century that the square was given its current name and was briefly called Jesuit Square .

During the period of socialism in Czechoslovakia , the square was called Dibrovovo námestie (German Dibrow Square ), after the Soviet partisan leader Ilya Danilowitsch Dibrow, who was temporarily active in western Slovakia.
