Lee Marion Bartlett (born March 30, 1907 in Hillsdale , Michigan , † October 31, 1972 in Dearborn Heights , Michigan) was an American athlete who specialized in the javelin throw .

Active career

Lee Bartlett attended Union City High School and went to Albion College in 1926. There he began his sporting career as an athlete and javelin thrower. In 1928 Bartlett became a Master of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and was appointed to the US Olympic selection. In Amsterdam , however, he could not prevail in the qualification and was eliminated in 16th place.

Four years later, at the Olympic Games in his own country, Bartlett qualified for the final with the fourth best distance. Here he could not improve and fell back to 5th place, but was still the best American in the competition. A year later, in 1933, he became the American amateur javelin champion for the first and only time.

In 1936 he qualified as the best of the Olympic eliminations for the Olympic Games in Berlin . In Berlin, after a qualifying round, there was a semi-final in which six athletes were able to qualify for the final. Bartlett reached the semifinals, but dropped out there in twelfth place.

Even after the outbreak of World War II, Lee Bartlett remained an active javelin thrower. In a competition in Grand Rapids in 1940 he threw his personal best with 73.15 m. In 1942 he ended his sporting career.

Later career

Lee Bartlett worked as a teacher and trainer in Dearborn for 30 years . He died on October 31, 1972 at the age of 65.
