Franz-Josef Maria Neumann (born December 8, 1955 in Aachen ) is a German cardiologist, he is the medical director of the Clinic for Cardiology and Angiology II of the University Heart Center Freiburg Bad Krozingen and holds the W3 Benedikt Kreutz endowed professorship Internal medicine / heart and circulatory diseases at the University of Freiburg . His clinical and scientific focus is interventional cardiology. He is one of the most cited cardiologists in the world.

Live and act

After attending primary school and the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium Aachen with Abitur in 1974, Neumann began studying medicine at the Technical University of Aachen . In 1977 he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation and completed his studies at the University of London (1979–1980). His license to practice medicine was granted in November 1980.

After scientific work at the Physiological Institute of the Technical University of Aachen, the doctorate to Dr. med. Neumann did basic military service in Geilenkirchen .

The training to become a specialist in internal medicine took place from 1983 to 1991 at the Medical University Clinic of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg with habilitation (1991) and additional qualification in cardiology (1992).

From 1992 Neumann was first senior physician at the cardiological clinic of the German Heart Center in Munich, where he was appointed associate professor for clinical and interventional cardiology (1996). He became permanent representative of the medical director at the 1st Medical Clinic of the Technical University of Munich (1999–2001).

From 2001 to 2012 Neumann was Executive Medical Director of the Bad Krozingen Heart Center and was appointed honorary professor at the University of Freiburg in 2002. Since 2012 he has been medical director of the Clinic for Cardiology and Angiology II at the University Heart Center Freiburg · Bad Krozingen; In 2013 he was appointed to the Benedikt Kreutz Endowed Professorship for Internal Medicine / Cardiovascular Diseases at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg.
