Franz Biener

Franz Hermann Biener (born March 4, 1866 in Schandau , † June 13, 1940 in Chemnitz ) was a German politician ( DNVP , WP ).

Life and work

After attending the community school in Schandau, Biener, who was of Protestant faith, completed an apprenticeship as a baker, which he completed in 1883 with the journeyman's examination. In 1891, in the meantime he had passed the master craftsman's examination, he set up his own bakery in Chemnitz . In 1898 he was elected head master of the Chemnitz bakers' guild. He was a co-founder and until 1922 chairman of the protection association for trade and commerce in Chemnitz. He was also the chairman of the Association of Insurance Companies for Self-Employed Businesses in Saxony . In 1911 he was involved in founding the Chemnitz commercial bank.

Political party

During the German Empire, Biener was a member of the Deutsch-Völkischer Verein in Chemnitz and ran for the anti-Semitic German Reform Party . In 1918 he took part in the founding of the DNVP , from which he resigned in 1930 to join the Reich Party of German Mittelstandes (Economic Party).

From 1897 on, Biener was a member of the city council of Chemnitz .

From 1909 to 1918 Biener was a member of the Second Chamber of the Saxon Estates Assembly . There he joined the conservative faction as an intern. He was a member of the Weimar National Assembly in 1919/20 , after which he was a member of the Reichstag until July 1932 .

Honors

The Obermeister Franz Biener Foundation , which was established in 1923 and dissolved during the National Socialist era, was named after Biener . Its task was to provide old-age provision for old and disabled bakers. Biener is also immortalized as a baker and member of the Reichstag from Heinrich-Beck-Straße in Chemnitz in the story Kaßberg by Stephan Hermlin . In 2010, the Chemnitz Bakers' Guild awarded the Franz Biener Prize for the first time .
