Franz Farnberger

Franz Farnberger (born July 8, 1952 in Schrems ) is an Austrian choir teacher and lied pianist. Since 1983 he has been the artistic director of the St. Florian Boys' Choir .

Life

After graduating from the BRG Gmünd (1970), he studied school music and piano vocal accompaniment at the Vienna University of Music and history at the university. From February 1976 on he worked for 7 years as Kapellmeister with the Vienna Boys' Choir . In this capacity, he conducted more than 800 concerts around the world and was a piano accompanist for recordings. In autumn 1983 he took over the artistic direction of the St. Florian Boys' Choir (as successor to Hans Bachl). Responsible for the musical training of the boys, rehearsing the program and conducting the concerts, he went on concert tours with the choir in all parts of the world and directed numerous CD recordings. Collaboration in the opera and concert area with conductors such as Franz Welser-Möst , Dennis Russell Davies or Rene Jacobs . Many years of concert activity and numerous CD recordings with Gunar Letzbor and his ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria. From 1984 to 1994 Farnberger was director of the Linz Singing School, from 1990 to 2017 he taught at the Bruckner Conservatory and the Anton Bruckner University in Linz.

His former soprano soloist Markus Stumpner has been the choir director since autumn 2018, while Franz Farnberger continues to be the overall artistic director.

Farnberger not only directs the boys 'choir concerts from the piano, he also works as a piano accompanist in song recitals, in recent years mainly together with his former boys' choir Alois Mühlbacher, who is now a sought-after countertenor. With him he recorded 4 solo CDs.
