Stonemasonry and sculpture F. Grein in Graz (before 1900)

In 1857 Eduard Grein founded a stonemasonry workshop in Graz, which he started with six workers. Seven years later it passed into the possession of his brother Franz Grein, who ran the business until 1879. From then on, his two sons, Ernst and Franz Grein, were in charge of the company. In 1886 the company became the sole property of Franz Grein.

Around 1890 Franz Grein was also the owner of extensive quarries on the slopes of the Glein and Stubalpe , which produced white and gray marble. He also owned serpentine quarries in Eastern Styria and granite quarries in the Bacher Mountains .

In 1897, Franz Grein set up his workshop for machine operation. By 1900 he employed a total of around 300 workers.

The company carried out significant stonemasonry and sculpture work for the Herz Jesu Church in Graz . In full recognition of these achievements, Prince-Bishop Dr. Johannes Zwerger erected a larger than life bust of the industrialist Franz Grein on the portal of the Herz Jesu Church.

Furthermore, some of the magnificent white marble specimens in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna come from the Grein quarries.

In recognition of his particularly satisfactory performance for the Graz University of Technology , the Kaiser awarded him the Golden Cross of Merit with the Crown . In 1908 he was appointed kuk court stonemason master.

In 1920 the company was taken over by Franz Grein's two sons, Ernst and Robert, and then expanded rapidly. They also managed to get started in the gravestone business. Today the Grein Group is an international company.
