Franz Josef Lochmatter

Franz Josef Lochmatter (* 1825 in St. Niklaus ; † 1897 in Macugnaga ) was a Swiss hotel, mountain climber and mountain guide pioneer . He introduced the first alpine ice ax in Switzerland. Franz Josef Lochmatter is also the tourism pioneer of Macugnaga.

Franz Josef Lochmatter from St. Niklaus in the Swiss canton of Valais is the oldest brother of Josef Marie Lochmatter , the founder and ancestor of the well-known St. Niklaus mountain guide dynasty. He married in Macugnaga. His wife died in 1908. The Lochmatter couple had two daughters.

Hotel Monte Rosa

Franz Josef Lochmatter built and opened the first hotel in Macugnaga in 1854 . He called it "Monte Rosa". Franz Josef Lochmatter is therefore the tourism pioneer of Macugnaga. After the Lochmatter couple's death, the hotel was continued by Luigi Jonghi.

Mountain guide and pioneer

Among other things, with his two brothers Josef Marie and / or Alexander , Franz Josef Lochmatter undertook tours in the Alps, whereby Franz Josef established the mountain guide system in his home community St. Niklaus and his residential community Macugnaga.

Around 1860 he brought the first pimple that was in use in Chamonix to the Nikolaital and Switzerland .

In 1861 he was the first to climb the Liskamm ( 4527  m above sea level ) and in 1867 the Jägerhorn ( 3970  m above sea level ).
