Alexander Lochmatter

Alexander Lochmatter (* 1837 in St. Niklaus ; † 1917 there ) was a Swiss hotelier, mountaineer and mountain guide .

Alexander Lochmatter from St. Niklaus in the Swiss canton of Valais is the younger brother of Josef Marie Lochmatter , the founder and ancestor of the well-known St. Niklaus mountain guide dynasty. The couple Katharina Imboden and Alexander Lochmatter had two sons. Like her father, the older Julius became a mountain guide and restaurateur, the younger Alexander became a hotelier.

After a successful career as a mountain guide, Julius Lochmatter (1867–1909) ran a restaurant in Birchmatten south of St. Niklaus Dorf. Julius married Rosa Pollinger in 1898, a daughter of the mountain guide pioneer Alois Pollinger .

Alexander Lochmatter built the Hotel Lochmatter opposite the mountain guide museum in St. Niklaus Dorf and opened it in 1886. Edward Whymper and his wife were guests at the Hotel Lochmatter. After the death of Alexander Lochmatter Senior in 1917, the Hotel Lochmatter was continued by his younger son Alexander. The family of Alexander Lochmatter Junior moved to Geneva in 1919 after the Hotel Lochmatter and its property had been sold to the municipality of St. Niklaus.

Mountain guide

I.a. Alexander Lochmatter went on tours in the Alps with his two brothers Franz Josef and / or Josef Marie.

On July 15 and July 16, 1865, he participated in the two rescue operations of the victims of the first ascent of the Matterhorn . In this regard, he was called up as a witness on July 22, 1865. The appropriate court record appeared in 1920 in the periodical Alpine Journal of the Alpine Club in French, which also contains the statements of Alexander Lochmatter unfortunately of 14 July. 1865

On July 12th 1866 he was one of the mountain guides from St. Niklaus who tackled the Hörnligrat of the Matterhorn for the first time after the tragic accident of July 14th 1865.

In 1895 he and Edward Whymper carried out the first traversal of the Gabelhorn Pass.
