Franz-Josef Spieker (born November 24, 1933 in Paderborn , † March 18, 1978 in Bali ) was a German filmmaker .

Spieker studied theater and literature as well as at the DIFF (German Institute for Film and Television) in Munich. He worked as a photo reporter and film critic and was assistant director to Géza von Radványi , from 1957 also to Stanley Kubrick ( Paths to Fame ) and Douglas Sirk , as well as assistant production and editing.

In 1958 he made his first short film, and in 1962 he signed the Oberhausen Manifesto . In the same year he took part in the episode film Hütet eure Töchter , a forerunner of the report films , with which producer Walter Koppel wanted to win the signatories of the manifesto.

Spieker became well known in 1967 with his first full-length feature film Wilder Reiter GmbH , a satire on the star hype that made him one of the hopes of the New German Cinema . The Bundeswehr satire with oak leaves and fig leaf and the social satire Kuckucksei im Gangstersest received less attention.

Spieker made numerous short films and in 1977 received the film tape in silver for The Personality Test on behalf of his production company Cinema 80 . He was found dead on the beach in Bali. As a signatory of the Oberhausen Manifesto, he was honored posthumously in 1982 with the gold ribbon .
