Franz Kolland (* 1954 in Feldbach ) is an Austrian sociologist and gerontologist .

Life

Franz Kolland was born in 1954 as the second of three children in Feldbach (Styria), has been married to Silvia Martín Pérez since 1988 and has two daughters.

He attended the Bundesrealgymnasium in Gleisdorf and successfully completed it in 1973 with the Matura. Franz Kolland studied sociology at the University of Vienna . In 1979 he received the academic degree of a master’s degree and received his doctorate in 1985 on the subject of “educational disadvantage in old age”. In 1994 he completed his habilitation in sociology and empirical social research with the habilitation thesis "Cultural action in the second half of life: sociological types of meaningful attitudes and behavior", which was published in 1996 under the title "Cultural styles of older people: beyond duty and everyday life" in Böhlau-Verlag. Since 1997 he has been associate professor for sociology at the University of Vienna.

From 2010 to 2019 he was the spokesman for the research focus “Family, Generations and Health Promotion” at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna, and between 2012 and 2019 he was the head of the Master’s program “Gerontology and Social Innovation” at the University of Vienna. In 2005 he took over the scientific supervision of the master’s degree in Geragogy at the Church of Education University in Vienna / Krems. In addition, he worked at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Social Gerontology and Life Course Research in Vienna (1981-2005), which he headed between 1999 and 2005 as scientific co-director. He is a board member of the Austrian Society for Gerontology and Geriatrics (ÖGGG) and a member of the age advisory board of the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection.

In 2019 he was appointed to the professorship for gerontology at the Karl Landsteiner Private University for Health Sciences in Krems. He has been Head of the Center for Gerontology and Health Research since July 2018.

His main research interests are in quantitative sociology and social gerontology with a focus on educational and cultural research in old age, health and care provision, older employees and new technologies ( Ambient Assisted Living , AAL).

The scientific commitment is shaped and supported by the intention to make visible, redefine and relocate the phase of old age and the elderly in (not only) Austrian society. According to his understanding, science not only has the theory-focused task of describing and analyzing social structures and dynamics, but also the practical task of helping to shape social changes. Kolland sees the concept of activity as insufficient for determining successful aging . Successful aging is rather to be located in the triangle of conditional (meaning-related) activity, autonomy and social recognition .

Franz Kolland publishes in national and international journals, he is editor of the "Zeitschrift für Gerontologie und Geriatrie" and co-editor of the "International Journal of Education and Aging".
