Franz Michael Senn (born September 28, 1759 in Flirsch ; † February 20, 1813 ) was a member of the Tyrolean state parliament, district judge of Pfunds and a political activist during the Napoleonic era.

Life

Without ever having had a legal education at a university , Senn was appointed district judge of Pfunds in 1787 at the age of 28 . In 1790 he became a member of the General Tyrolean Parliament, in which he soon played a leading role. In the same year he was sent to Vienna to represent the interests of Tyrolean farmers before Emperor Leopold II . In 1799 he fought as captain of the Pfunds riflemen near Martinsbruck and achieved the sparing of Pfunds with the oncoming French troops through diplomatic skill . In 1801 he submitted a federal and democratic draft reform to the Tyrolean state constitution . However, since Senn was strictly against the privileges of the nobility , this was hardly discussed. In 1805 he caused another sensation: In a memorandum he wrote, he proposed the establishment of a neutral Alpine state consisting of Salzburg , Tyrol and Vorarlberg , otherwise the unification of Tyrol and Vorarlberg with Switzerland . After Tyrol became part of Bavaria , he was therefore dismissed as a district judge and forced into retirement. Having got into financial difficulties, he organized the uprising against France and Bavaria in the Tyrolean Oberland in 1809 , wrote several appeals for resistance against the occupation and managed to organize support from Vorarlberg and Switzerland. However, when he realized the futility of the fighting, he tried to calm the situation, which was also troubled by him. However, this brought Senn the displeasure of his comrades, whereupon he left Tyrol and moved to Vienna. There he became a magistrate. A "nervous fever" led to a sudden death there, so that there were long rumors that he had been murdered. Senn is the father of the poet Johann Chrysostomus Senn .
