Live and act

Franz Sales Günter was born as the son of the baker Joseph Günter. On December 15, 1854, the Schelklingen City Schools Office testifies to “the auditor's assistant Franz Günter, born on November 9, 1830, son of the local citizen and beker Josef Günter, who wants to apply for the Oberamtsspahrkaßenkaßier position in Schorndorf that he has a very good rating therefore the position in question can be transferred to him with peace of mind ”.

Franz Sales Günter had already been active as an administrative actuary in the municipalities of the Oberndorf aN district since 1855. After his election to the city school on November 19, 1870, he held the position of administrative actuary in addition to his new office.

On November 19, the new city school election took place after the previous mayor Jacob wanted to resign from office and join the civil service. Of the 299 eligible voters, 199 voted for the administrative actuary Günter and 65 for the administrative actuary Mauch. "After the election, the city council gave him a fixed annual salary of 576 fl and a staff allowance of 100 fl". On December 11th, 1870 Günter received the citizenship of the city of Oberndorf aN

Günter's tenure as town school lasted for 29 years until 1899. During his tenure, the Mauser weapons factory was founded . The following economic boom in the city through major orders from inland and also from Serbia and Turkey, and the generally excellent administration of the city by Günter, were honored during his lifetime: In 1883 he was awarded the Golden Medal of Civil Merit. The King of Württemberg also awarded him the Silver Jubilee Medal and the Turkish Sultan, head of the Ottoman Empire, the 4th Class Osmanje Order .

On May 2, 1898, the 53-year-old, former and now unemployed factory worker in the Mauser arms factory, Philipp Gottlob Großmann, carried out a pistol attack on Franz Günter. Without any particular reason, perhaps out of disappointment, the perpetrator shot Günter, who was on his way home from the town hall, from a short distance in the late afternoon. The bullet only grazed Günter's left temple without leaving any major injuries. The perpetrator, who did not resist, was immediately arrested and interrogated. Großmann made completely confused statements during the interrogation. The doctor called in diagnosed an advanced mental illness. The perpetrator reported that he was treated carelessly by his family in his youth and that his father often beat him. Based on the medical statement, the court waived an indictment and transferred Großmann to the Zwiefalten sanatorium .

“In 1898, Mayor Günter, who had been suffering from an illness for some time, submitted a request for retirement, which was granted, especially since he had now reached the age of 68. The new elections were announced on February 22, 1899 (…) ”. A short time after his retirement he died on September 1, 1901 in Oberndorf aN at the age of 71. His wife Pauline left him a widower six years earlier: She died in Oberndorf aN on November 10, 1895 at the age of 62.

Franz Sales Günter married in Stuttgart on October 11, 1859 with Pauline Karoline Pfäfflin (1833–1895) from Rommelshausen (Kernen im Remstal near Waiblingen), daughter of Johann Gottlieb Friedrich Pfäfflin, mayor in Rommelshausen and Louise Mathilde née Veiel. Three children were born in the marriage: the first-born Ottmar Emil Otto (born in Oberndorf aN on July 7, 1860) became head nurse in Oberndorf aN. The second child Amelie Sophie Julie Adolphine (born in Oberndorf aN on October 28, 1861) married on 12 May 1917 the district notary of Oberndorf aN Ferdinand Schaidle.
