Franz Xaver Kolb (born November 27, 1827 in Ehingen (Danube) , † June 30, 1889 in Ellwangen (Jagst) ) was a German church painter.

life and work

Franz Xaver Kolb was born in Ehingen on the Danube in 1827 as the son of the saddler and later sacristan Franz Kolb and his wife Marianne nee. Mietinger born. Kolb's 18 years younger brother Hans (1845-1928) was also a draftsman and painter and was director of the Royal School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart. Little is known about his childhood and youth in Ehingen, but his parents' home and hometown gave him a strong Catholic influence.

Franz Xaver Kolb initially studied theology for several semesters at the University of Tübingen from 1847 to 1849 as a convict of the Wilhelmsstift and switched to painting in 1849. At the age of 21, he enrolled at the Munich Royal Art Academy on November 17, 1849 , but was absent from October 1852 until (...) and rejoined until the end of the summer semester 1853. He received the matriculation on March 4, 1854. In Munich he joined the history painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach in painting . Kolb settled in Ellwangen . He married (when?) Luise Franziska geb. Jonas. The marriage remained childless.

Prelate Dr. Franz Joseph Schwarz (1821–1885) in Ellwangen, Kolb arranged numerous church restorations in the Diocese of Rottenburg , for example in Bad Mergentheim, Geislingen, Bollingen, Nenningen, Ehingen (Danube), Ellwangen and Hohenberg.

Church paintings by him can be found in Regensburg in St. Jakob and in Feldkirch in Vorarlberg. Panel paintings by his hand from 1886 can be found in the chapel of the grammar school of the Mehrerau monastery in Vorarlberg near Bregenz. Another panel is in the Ellwang pilgrimage church Schönenberg on a side altar. Kolb was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art .
