Jan Thörnqvist

Jan Thörnqvist (born October 9, 1959 in Karlskrona ) is a Swedish rear admiral and has been the commander of the Swedish navy since 2011 .

Life

Jan Thörnqvist joined the Swedish Navy as a seaman in 1976 and served on various ships. 1981–1982 he completed his officer training course and was promoted to lieutenant in 1983 . As a result, he was deployed as a second officer on various ships such as icebreakers and mine layers and in 1987 took over his first own command with the Skaftö . From 1993 to 1999, various other commands both on ships and by diving units joined before Thörnqvist was appointed chief of staff of the 3rd Flotilla stationed in Karlskrona.

After serving at the headquarters of the Swedish armed forces and visiting the US Naval Command College in 2004, Thörnqvist was commander of the 4th Flotilla from 2006 to 2009 and then commander of the Karlskrona naval base .

In 2011 Thörnqvist took over command of the Swedish Navy.

Private

Thörnqvist is married and has three children. In addition to Swedish, he also speaks English and German .
