history

The community was founded in 1867 by Alphonsa Kuborn . Alphonsa Kuborn was born in Mertert (Luxembourg) in 1830 and initially entered the congregation of the Hospital Sisters of St. Elisabeth in Luxemburg-Pfaffenthal . A few years later she was asked to found a new community in Schweich with some women working in the nursing sector, initially called Sisters of Mercy of the regulated 3rd Order of St. Francis of Assisi in Schweich . The rule of the order was approved in 1896. Due to the Kulturkampf , the small community had to relocate to the Netherlands in 1877 and founded the St. Joseph Monastery in Valkenburg aan de Geul there in 1883 . The provincial office for the German-Dutch province is still located there today. Since 1939 the community has been called “Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph". In 1984 the congregation was granted papal law. The Generalate was located at the founding site in Schweich until August 2011 and was then relocated to Curitiba in the Brazilian state of Paraná due to a lack of new members in Europe .
