history

Franciscan monastery in Kadaň

The history of the Franciscan Monastery of the Fourteen Holy Helpers goes back to a chapel, first mentioned in 1469, to which the first Franciscans built a temporary building in 1473 . In 1480 the church was consecrated with three naves. The church was the final resting place of the Lords of Lobkowicz . The growth of the monastery was hampered by the Thirty Years' War . Restoration took place in the second half of the 17th century. During the Josephine reforms in 1785, the monastery narrowly escaped liquidation.

After the quiet 19th century, the Franciscans had to cede the monastery to the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War . In 1950 the monastery was closed and it was only after the fall of the communist government that it was operated by some Franciscans from 1991 to 1994. Then the building was given to the diocese of Leitmeritz . The diocese rented the monastery building to the town of Kadaň in 1995, which initiated the renovation work and then housed the town museum here. The monastery is now a national cultural monument. In addition to the museum exhibitions, guided tours are offered in the monastery.

The Kadaň dam lies below the monastery .
