The Francis Hospital Berlin is located in the center of Berlin, in the district Tiergarten of the district center . The hospital was founded in 1908. The Franziskus Hospital is designated as a vascular medical focus hospital .

history

In 1908, the surgeon Eduard Wolffenstein of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters asked the holy martyr Georg zu Thuine nuns to take over care in his private clinic. On May 20, 1908, the Thuin religious order laid the foundation stone for the Franziskus Hospital by sending twelve Franciscan Sisters to the surgeon's private clinic. With the help of the nuns, the hospital, initially equipped with 90 beds, grew steadily. By the end of 1929 it had expanded its capacity to over 200 beds and four wards. During the First World War the hospital served as a military hospital for 150 to 200 wounded. Bombs damaged the hospital at Burggrafenstrasse 1/2 during the last days of the war. On April 29, 1945, the Soviet army occupied the house. During this time, operations could largely be maintained. In the post-war period, the hospital adapted to the changed social situation through restructuring. After the city of Berlin was sealed off in 1948, excess beds were dismantled and in 1962 the hospital was converted into a general hospital with employed doctors. Between the mid-1960s and the early 1980s, there were several health policy considerations to relocate the hospital to another location and to build a new building for it. It was not until 1983 that the decision was made to stay at the old location and add an extension. With its completion in October 1989, the usable area of the Franziskus Hospital in Berlin doubled. In 1994–1998 the old building was renovated. Modernization measures included the new construction of the central emergency room in 2013 and the optional service station in 2015. Franziskus-Krankenhaus Berlin has been a member of the Elisabeth Vinzenz Association (EVV) since November 1, 2015 .
