Frassineto class

The Frassineto class was a class of Italian gunboats on Lake Garda . The ten individual units of the class were built in 1859 by the Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée shipyard in La Seyne-sur-Mer as gunboats that could be transported over land. With a displacement of 101 GRT, a length of 24.7 m, a width of 4.9 m and a draft of 1.6 m, they were brought to max. 7 knots powered. The crew consisted of 18 men and the armament consisted of a 16 cm cannon model 1858.

During the campaign of 1859, seven of the boats built for the French Navy were transported via Toulon and Genoa and from there in parts by train to Desenzano del Garda , where they were assembled, given to the Sardinian Navy and launched.

They were given the names RN Frassineto , RN Torrione , RN Castenedolo , RN Pozzolengo , RN Adda , RN Sesia and RN Mincio . RN Sesia was lost in 1860 in a boiler explosion. The others stayed in service until 1867 when they were scrapped. They were then decommissioned because the Italian Navy received larger formerly Austrian gunboats, the RN Principe Oddone , the RN Principessa Clotilde and the RN San Marco at the end of the war in 1866 .
