The feminist library MONAliesA is a women's library founded in Leipzig in 1990 . It is carried by Lotta eV and is located in the House of Democracy at Bernhard-Göring-Straße 152.

history

The idea for the women's library came up shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall . For this reason, the Leipzig women's initiative was launched. After start-up funding from the Federal Ministry for Women and Youth , a book collection succeeded, with around 1500 media already being collected with the help of various women's libraries from the old federal states . As early as 1991, readings and lectures were given regularly to and by various authors . The association also publishes the women 's papers, which publish reviews. After this initial phase, a complex network developed between the library, the women's and mother houses of the city and numerous other associations. The name MONAliesA was also introduced at this time. In 1993, the symposium of women's and lesbian archives and libraries in the German-speaking area took place in Leipzig.

On February 4, 1997, the library had to close due to a lack of funds after cuts in public funds. However, the offices could be persuaded by protest actions to give in, so that the library could be reopened on May 6, 1997. As a consequence of the closure, MONAliesA e. V. In 2001 the library once again hosted the conference of women's and lesbian archives and libraries in German-speaking countries . The library was gradually enlarged so that it was necessary to move to the House of Democracy , where special rooms were set up for the girls' events, the gallery and the film and music media. In the meantime, the library was used as an archive for women's literature from the GDR and the time of reunification.

MONAliesA participates every year in the literature festival Leipzig reads the Leipzig book fair as well as in the Intercultural Week Leipzig . In 2002 the house took part in the protest actions of the independent scene against the cuts in funding by the city of Leipzig. In 2005, Susanne Scharff left the women's library, and Hella Rößiger became the new managing director. In 2010, Jessika Bock replaced Hella Rößiger.

At the end of 2013 the previous sponsoring association MONAliesA eV got into a financial crisis and in 2014 had to file an application to open insolvency proceedings ; the library was closed. With a new sponsoring association, Lotta eV, MONAliesA was reopened on September 17, 2014 and has been called MONAliesA Feminist Library since then .
