The Frauenfelder Radballer (formerly ATB Frauenfeld) are a Swiss cycling club from Frauenfeld in the canton of Thurgau . The club and its teams can be found in various divisions. The Fanion team currently plays in the top division of Swiss Indoor & Unicycling.

history

On May 17, 1907, the Frauenfeld Workers' Cyclists Association was founded by 13 people interested in cycling in the "Central" restaurant in Frauenfeld . Little can be reported from the first half century of the club's history, as a large part of the club's files fell victim to a fire.

In 1916 the state association ATB (Arbeiter Touring Bund) was founded, which the Frauenfeld section “Solidarity” joined.

Beginnings

The association was also politically active at the beginning and had a recognized position in the organized workforce. In terms of sport, touring was predominant in the first few years . Later also the holding Saalsport (Reigen- and artistic cycling) in the section feeder. Together with touring, indoor sports were the main activities during the first fifty years of the club's history.

Bike ball

In the 1950s, with the arrival of a few young men, the bike ball game also gained a foothold in club activities. The first bicycle ball goals were made from roof battens and the hall floor had to be specially treated before each training session. At that time, training was still taking place in the municipal gym in Frauenfeld .

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Frauenfeld cycling players relocated to the newly built Oberwiesen school complex, where they still train today. On this occasion, the idea of founding a bike ball tournament , which received its baptism of fire on the first weekend in January 1961, was also considered.

New year tournament

The association organizes the annual international New Year's cycling tournament on the first weekend in January. In 1982 this was carried out on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the association in the Festhütte Frauenfeld, with the participation of the 20-time world champions Jan and Indrich Pospisil from what was then Czechoslovakia . The event ended in a financial fiasco and it took the club a long time to return to the black.

The event will be held for the 60th time in 2020 and the international cycling elite are still meeting in Frauenfeld for a mutual test of strength.

present

The only successful indoor cycling sport for the Frauenfeld cycling players today is cycling . The junior department of the Frauenfeld cycling team is one of the largest of the Swiss cycling clubs.

The association has a total of 100 active members. 9 teams will take part in championships in 2020.

The club offers space for top-class sport with trained coaches as well as for those interested in popular sport . He maintains a friendly relationship with one another, in the spirit of the club song composed in 1995, in which in Swiss German it says still training gat's in Spunte, and I drink ice cream, I gönd no lang nöd hei (German: «after the training it is still in the dive bar , we drink together, we do not go far from home ").
