from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Frauenkirche or Cathedral of Our Lady ( Arabic كنيسة السيدة) is the cathedral of the Eparchy Latakia of the Syrian-Maronite Church in Latakia in Syria .

Location

The church is located in downtown Latakia on the northwest corner of the intersection of Yarmuk Street (شارع اليرموك) with Hananu Street (شارع هنانو).

history

The establishment of the Maronite Church of Our Lady of Latakia is linked to the Latakia diocese. Until the 1970s, Latakia and western Syria belonged to the Tripoli Archeparchy founded in the 17th century with its seat in Tripoli ( Lebanon ). On April 16, the Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole of the Orient , Anton Peter Khoraiche , established the Apostolic Administration of Latakia, which in 1977 became a diocese. The new, modern-style Cathedral of Our Lady on Jarmuk Street became the cathedral church.

architecture

The Cathedral of Our Lady is made of concrete with an irregular rectangular plan. The asymmetrical bell tower, on the top of which sits a paw cross , is on the southeast wall of the building.

Diocese and bishop

The Cathedral of Latakia is the seat of the Maronite Eparchy Latakia ( Archieparchia Laodicena Graecorum Melkitarum ), which has existed since 1977 . In 2013 it comprised around 45,000 believers in 33 parishes with 29 priests. Eparch has been Archbishop Antoine Chbeir, born on January 12, 1961, since April 18, 2015 . The eparchy is directly subordinate to the Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole Orient in Bkerke , currently Bechara Boutros Rai . The four ecclesiastical provinces are Tartus, Latakia, Hama and Homs.
