The Frauenmeer is a small lake north of the village of Timmel in the East Frisian district of Aurich ( Lower Saxony ). Geomorphologically it is a pingo ruin . It was formed around 15,000 years ago at the end of the Vistula glacial period . During the Ice Age, an ice core formed, which grew continuously in height and width due to the influx of flowing water from the deep underground. The layers of soil above were thus pushed upwards and gradually slipped off. A higher edge area was thus formed. With the end of the Ice Age, the ice core melted and the Frauenmeer was created.

In Timmel there are several pingo ruins, such as the Sebensmeer and the Hilgenmeer , today's village pond. However, the Sebensmeer silted up and today only a lowland can be seen. The Frauenmeer is eleven meters deep.
