The Frauentor (formerly the gate to our dear woman ) was a city gate of the inner city wall (bishop's wall) in Augsburg . It was about 140 meters away (as the crow flies) north of Augsburg Cathedral in today's Frauentorstraße and separated the episcopal city from the Georgsviertel .

history

First mentioned in 1143, the gate served to protect the episcopal city. In 1611 a renovation was carried out by the city architect Elias Holl . At that time, the facade was also decorated with frescoes by the town painter and mayor Matthias Kager . Due to the very limited space and the narrow archway, the Frauentor was demolished in 1885 despite public protests.

The demolition material of the gate was transported to the site of the city gardening center on Rosenaustraße (later city garden ) and served there as a base layer for the new park paths. The Swabian district exhibition was to take place there in the same year .
