The Fraunhofer Institute for Marine Biotechnology and Cell Technology EMB, also known as “Fraunhofer EMB” for short, is based in Lübeck and is part of the Fraunhofer Society . In the Hanseatic city she develops solutions for a wide variety of problems in medical and biotechnology .

history

The institute was founded at the beginning of 2008 under the name Fraunhofer Institution for Marine Biotechnology and emerged from the working group "Cell Differentiation & Cell Technology" initiated in 2004 at the University of Lübeck , which was established there by the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Technology . This decision was based on research results in the field of adult stem cell research, which were obtained at the University of Lübeck and can be used as the basis for new therapies. The foundation of the EMB goes back to an initiative of the University of Lübeck and its former rector Alfred X. Trautwein , his successor Peter Dominiak and the founding director of Fraunhofer IBMT, Klaus Gersonde and his successor Günter R. Fuhr. The Fraunhofer EMB is headed by Charli Kruse.

Research and Development

In line with its work profile, the institution is a member of the Life Sciences Association of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and focuses primarily on technology and technology development in the fields of cell technology, aquatic biotechnology and cell-based medical technology . In cooperation with industrial companies and clinics, the EMB works on projects in the areas; Therapeutic approaches for regenerative medicine, development of new culture systems for cells of higher organisms, use of cellular properties for medical, industrial and agricultural applications, development of novel test systems for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and ecological applications as well as biotechnology, laboratory device development, development of imaging methods, aquaculture methods, water monitoring and biodiversity conservation .

The core competencies of the facility lie in the handling of cellular in vitro systems as well as in molecular biological, protein biochemical, cellular and marine biological examination methods.

With the IBMT and the support of the Hagenbeck Zoo and the Rostock Zoo, the EMB founded the German Cell Bank for Wild Animals "Alfred Brehm", or "CRYO-BREHM" for short, and prepares stable cell cultures from different animal species that can be used by later generations drops.

Infrastructure

Around 65 scientists, engineers and technicians as well as research students and interns (as of 2014) work interdisciplinary in cooperation with industry and research.

The Fraunhofer EMB and the Institute for Medical and Marine Biotechnology at the University of Lübeck are headed by Charli Kruse. In addition, Kruse is the head of the industrial cell technology working group of the Bio Germany branch association.

The institute is located in a new building in the Lübeck university district next to the campus of the University of Lübeck and the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences .

Cooperations

In the medical field, the EMB works together with the University of Lübeck, with which it conducts more than a dozen research projects. The cooperation with the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences focuses primarily on the application-oriented industrial area. In addition to academic collaborations, EMB develops technologies and products on behalf of industry on the topics mentioned above.

Fraunhofer EMB is a member of the German Society for Regenerative Medicine, the Society for Marine Aquaculture, a member of the German Stem Cell Network (GSCN) and a member of the Fraunhofer Group for Life Sciences (VLS). The biological, biomedical, pharmacological and toxicological competencies of seven Fraunhofer institutes are bundled in this group.
