Fred Jackson, Jr.
Fred Jackson, Jr. (* ca. 1945) is an American saxophonist (alto, tenor and baritone saxophone) and flutist of fusion jazz .
After serving in the army, Jackson played with Ray Charles in 1967 and 1968 . After training at the California Institute of the Arts , he was a member of Bobby Hutcherson's band in 1971 and was involved in the recording of Head On . Frank Zappa brought him in to record The Grand Wazoo . In 1975 he played in the big band of Horace Silver . During the next three decades he was primarily active as a studio musician with Jimmy Smith , Carole King , John Mayall , Maria Muldaur , Bill Cosby , Ry Cooder , Joe Sample , The Whispers , Solomon Burke , Diane Schuur and Earth, Wind & Fire .
