Fred Klein

Fred Klein (born April 8, 1898 in Badoeng , Dutch East Indies as Friedrich Franz Albert Klein; † April 24, 1990 ) was a Dutch painter who spent most of his life in France . Sometimes he is also listed under Frits Klein . He is the father of the painter Yves Klein (1928–1962), a son from his first marriage with the painter Marie Raymond (1908–1989).

Life

Klein's parents were Dutch. The family returned to their country of origin when he was five years old. When Klein decided to become a painter, he first moved to Paris in 1919 and was tutored by André Lhote , among others . From 1926 he lived with his wife Marie Richmond in the Dutch artists' colony of Cagnes-sur-Mer in southern France until the Second World War broke out and they returned to Paris. In 1960 he married the British artist Ursula Bardsley.

His motifs mainly included colorful beach scenes as well as flowers and horses. His techniques included pastel painting and watercolor painting.
