Fred Mecke (born November 7, 1960 ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga , the highest East German football class, and played there for Dynamo Dresden , Stahl Riesa and Halleschen FC Chemie .

Athletic career

In 1971, at the age of ten, Mecke was accepted into the children's department at Dynamo Dresden. From 1976 to 1978 he played in the Dynamo junior team and became a member of the GDR junior national team in the summer of 1976. Mecke played his first international junior match on October 10, 1976 as a midfielder in the encounter between the GDR and Poland (1-0). By 1979 he was called up in a total of 23 junior internationals. Dynamo Dresden had already nominated him for its junior league team for the 1978/79 season.

Although Mecke was also registered for the junior league for the 1980/81 season, he came to the first team of Dynamo Dresden in the first two GDR league points in use. He owed his first league debut to the fact that midfielder Gerd Weber was not ready for action. With Weber also Mecke's further development is connected, because Weber was dismissed at the beginning of 1981 because of attempted “ illegal border crossing ” at Dynamo Dresden and Mecke took over his position in the second half of the season. So he came in 1980/81 on eleven league appearances, but played seven international matches with the GDR youth national team . For the 1981/82 season, the 1.80 m tall Mecke was officially registered for the GDR Oberliga, but was only used in the first two league games. He spent the rest of the season back in the junior league.

In the summer of 1982, Mecke moved to the second-class company sports club (BSG) Stahl Riesa, which after being relegated in 1981 sought promotion to the league a second time. Together with his former Dynamo team- mates Claus Boden and Rainer Sachse , Mecke achieved the hoped-for rise to which he had contributed with 24 matches and seven goals. In his first season in the Riesa league, Mecke was a regular in midfield with 22 appearances and four goals. Since Riesa managed to stay in the league, Mecke played again in the top league in 1984/85. This time he came back as a midfielder to 19 point games and scored one goal. Mecke completed his last season at Riesa in 1985/86 with another 20 games and two goals.

After four years in Riesa, the 25-year-old Mecke decided to move again and for the 1986/87 season joined the GDR league club Hallescher FC Chemie, who had been relegated from the league two years ago and had already missed promotion twice. With Mecke, who had played 20 point games, the promotion succeeded in the third attempt. Mecke's hopes for a sixth league season ended disappointingly, because he was only used on the 2nd and 3rd matchdays for a total of 62 minutes. In January 1988, Mecke moved to the GDR league club BSG Chemie Buna Schkopau and then joined the BSG activist Black Pump , with whom he also played in the GDR league until 1991 . Then Mecke played for the Dresdner SC first in the state league, later in the amateur league and most recently in 1994/95 again in the sixth class state league.

Later on, Mecke worked as a football coach for lower-class clubs and was most recently involved with FV Dresden-Nord and its successor club SC Borea Dresden .
