Frederic Eugene Basil Foley (* 1891 in St. Paul , Minnesota ; † 1966 ) was an American urologist .

Foley, who originally taught English, graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in 1914 and then attended the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine through 1918 . He initially worked as a surgeon , but was enrolled on the American Board of Urology as a urologist on July 29, 1937 . In 1927 Foley developed a balloon catheter that is generally used as an indwelling catheter or with the help of which, for example, contrast media can be introduced into the urinary bladder . This catheter is known internationally as the Foley catheter. A further development by Foley is the surgical technique known as Foley plastic as well as renal pelvis plastic according to Foley . This special plastic is used to treat hydronephrosis caused by a high ureter .
