Frederic Tuten (born December 2, 1936 in Bronx , New York City ) is an American writer and screenwriter .

life and work

Frederic Tuten grew up in the Bronx, tried his hand at being an artist and earned a Ph.D. in 19th Century American Literature from New York University . He traveled through South and Central America and studied pre-Columbian art at the University of Mexico .

In 1971 he published his first novel The Adventures of Mao on the Long March , an experimental work on the Long March and a fictional interview with Mao Zedong . He also dealt with historical figures in two later novels, Jean Lambert Tallien (1988) and Vincent van Gogh (1997). In 1981 he wrote the screenplay for the film Possession together with the director Andrzej Żuławski . In 1993 Tintin in the New World was published . In this novel, Hergés Tim, Struppi and Captain Haddock meet Mynheer Peeperkorn, Naphta, Settembrini and Clawdia Chauchat, characters from Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain , in a hotel near Machu Picchu , with the cartoon character Tim playing a role similar to Hans Castorp.

In addition to the novels, he also wrote short stories and essays on mainly artistic subjects.

He was friends with the artist Roy Lichtenstein , who created the covers for the novels The Adventures of Mao on the Long March and Tintin in the New World .
