Frederick Keeping

Frederick Keeping (also Frank Keeping , born August 11, 1867 in Pennington , † February 21, 1950 in Lymington , Hampshire , United Kingdom ) was a British cyclist who took part in the 1896 Summer Olympics. He competed in the 333 meter race and in the 12 hour race. In the 333-meter race in the Neo Faliro Velodrome , he finished fifth with a time of 27.0 seconds. In the twelve-hour race, he finished second behind the Austrian Adolf Schmal, just one lap behind and 295 kilometers driven .

After the Olympics, Keeping opened a bike shop on Milford-on-the-Sea High Street that over the years has mutated into a car repair shop. Keeping was the father of football player Michael Keeping who was also Real Madrid coach for several years .

Protests

Keeping and his teammate Edward Battell worked as servants in the British Embassy in Athens . As a result, they were viewed as non- gentlemen by many British people living in Athens at the time . Gentlemen were only the athletes who did not allow themselves to be paid for it and competed as amateurs . However, since the two British worked for the embassy, ​​they were not amateurs.
