biography

Frederick Schaefer emigrated to the USA . He arrived penniless in New York City on October 23, 1838 . Within two weeks he found a job at the Sebastian Sommers Brewery, located on Broadway between 18th and 19th Street.

In June 1839 his brother Maximilian also came to New York City. Maximilian had brought a recipe for lager beer with him from home. The two brothers decided to save money and buy up Sommer's shares. In 1842 they put their plans into practice and renamed the brewery FM Schaefer Brewery .

Over the next few years, the Schaefer brewery had to change location several times, as lager turned out to be extremely popular. Together with his brother, Frederick had bought a number of properties in Manhattan . With the continuing boom between 1840 and 1850, these had increased in value considerably - the Schaefer brothers thus had a solid financial basis at that time.

The Schaefers managed their brewery very successfully. In 1871 it was the sixth largest brewery in the USA. In 1880 they chose the name F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company - this existed until the brewery was sold in 1980.

Frederick Schaefer died in 1897, his brother Maximilian took over the management of the brewery. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery .

At the height of its success, the Schaefer Brewery was the fifth largest brewery in the United States.
