Fredriksskan's fortress

Model of a Swedish fortress from this period

Fredriksskans fästning ( German  Fredriksskans Fortress ) is a former ski jump outside of Gävle .

In 1612 a log cabin was built on a small island in the strait between the inner and outer fjords of Gävle.

In 1717 a ski jump was built at the same place. This is said to have been called Hugo-Schanze ( Hugoskans in Swedish ) from the start . It was named after the then royal governor Hugo Hamilton von Hageby (1655 to 1724). At the beginning of the same year, when the ski jumping hill was almost finished and equipped with ten cannons, it was given the name Fredriks-Schanze ( Swedish: Fredriksskans ). In the summer of 1719 the ski jump was expanded further. Thanks to these measures, the Russian fleet sailed past the Gävlebucht and moved on towards Norrtälje to destroy and burn it down. This happened in the context of the Russian devastation along the Swedish Baltic coast in the years 1719 to 1721. The only provisionally built hill began to deteriorate quickly, but it was rebuilt in the years 1727 to 1728.

At the beginning of the Russo-Swedish War (1788 to 1790) the fortress was built on the orders of Gustav III. Relocated with crew and equipment to Vaxholm . But the people of Gävle hired new troops and bought new equipment for the fortress. The new fortress was stationed on Holmudden .

In 1808 the Swedish Crown had the fortress repaired and strengthened. In 1863 the fort's equipment was abolished and the occupation came to an end. In 1892 the fortress became the property of the town of Gävle, which demolished it in 1902 as part of the construction of its new port building.

A 4.5 meter high memorial stone made of red granite was set up on the site of the old ski jump. This bears an inscription under a relief image of the hill cast from bronze.

The second company of Norrland's Artillery Regiment in Östersund is called the Fredriksskans Company.
