FreeMat is a programming environment and a scripting language for numerical solution and representation of mathematical problems , such as B. matrix calculation , solving linear systems of equations , integration , representation of families of curves etc. It is to a large extent compatible with the proprietary MATLAB , in contrast to it, however, like GNU Octave , free software .

FreeMat supports the MATLAB file format and syntax and uses some IDL concepts such as reference parameters . In addition, FreeMat has an interface to C , C ++ , and Fortran , allows the development of parallel distributed algorithms (with Message Passing Interface ) and offers graphic display options, also in 3D .
