Freedom Call is a power metal - band from Germany .

history

Freedom Call was founded in early 1998 in Nuremberg by singer and guitarist Chris Bay ( Moon'Doc ) and drummer Dan Zimmermann ( Gamma Ray ). After the first recordings, they were joined by the bassist Ilker Ersin, with whom Bay had already played on Moon'Doc, and the guitarist Sascha Gerstner. In the same year the band recorded a self-titled demo. The debut album Stairway to Fairyland and EP Taragon followed in 1999. In Taragon one was cover of Ultravox -Stücks Dancing with Tears in My Eyes released. In February 2001, Crystal Empire was released , later in the same year Gerstner was replaced by Cédric "Cede" Dupont. Dupont and Ersin left the band in July and September 2005, respectively, after the release of the two albums Eternity and The Circle of Life . A little later, Armin Donderer and Lars Rettkowitz joined as successors. In January 2010 the album Legend of the Shadowking was released . Dan Zimmermann left the band at the end of 2009 due to the increasing double burden with Gamma Ray. His successor was Klaus Sperling (Ex- Primal Fear , Sinner etc.), who had been helping the band out on the drums at concerts for some time.

On September 5, 2011, the band announced the release of a new album on their homepage, followed by a European tour. The studio recordings for the already finished songs started on September 11th, 2011. The album called Land Of The Crimson Dawn was released in Germany on February 24, 2012, in the USA on February 28, 2012 and in the rest of the world on February 27, 2012. The special edition includes a bonus CD with cover versions. The bands Powerworld, Secret Sphere, Downspirit, Manimal, Neonfly and Hannes Braun from Kissin 'Dynamite interpret songs by Freedom Call on it. On February 21, 2014, Freedom Call released their seventh studio album, Beyond . The current album "Master of Light" was released on November 11th, 2016. In 2018 drummer Ramy Ali and bassist Ilker Ersin announced their departure from the band. The drumming was then taken over by several guest musicians at concerts. In April 2019, Francesco Ferraro on bass and Timmi Breideband on drums were announced as permanent new band members.

Style and reception

Freedom Call plays keyboard-heavy Power Metal with catchy, often hymn-like melodies.

The lyrics of their first three albums are set in a fantasy world, while The Circle of Life deals with a variety of topics from the complex “man and society”. The 2007 album Dimensions "connects" according to Freedom Call "now the most successful characteristics of both works" (meaning Eternity and The Circle of Life ) and deals with the question of where the climate catastrophe will end and what the future of mankind looks like. The 2010 released "Legend of the Shadowking" draws its themes from a more extensive area than the previous albums. In addition to well-known fantasy topics such as the myth of Merlin or the city of Babylon, the historically real figure Ludwig II of Bavaria is dealt with in several songs .
