Freguesia de Santana is a former town on the northern tip of the Brazilian island of Ilha Grande in the state of Rio de Janeiro . In the 17th century, Freguesia de Santana was an important center of agricultural production on the coast of southeast Brazil. Coffee , sugar cane , vegetables and grain were grown on the plantations around the community . Most of the hard field work was done by slaves from Africa . At the beginning of the 18th century, the port of Freguesia de Santana was the most important in the south ofRio de Janeiro , which led to the fact that the entire Ilha Grande got its first legal identity in 1803 as Freguesia de Santana da Ilha Grande de Fora . Today the place is deserted. The Igreja de Santana church is the only intact building today, but the old mansions have fallen into ruins. Along with beaches and the Lagoa Azul, it is now the most important tourist attraction of the Freguesia de Santanas.
