Charge carrier (physics)

A carrier is in the physics a with a charge lossy particles . The electrical charge is almost always meant.

In semiconductor physics , charge carriers are understood to be freely movable electrons and defect electrons . They enable charge transport, i.e. electric current . A defect electron is an electron that is missing from the entirety of the valence electrons; it acts like a moving positive elementary charge. Defect electrons are therefore also simply referred to as “holes”.

Also ions are electrical charge carriers, z. B. in electrolysis , in a plasma or in particle accelerators . Some quasiparticles and quarks also carry electrical charges.

Particles that exist with a negative and a positive charge can occur as carrier pairs .
