White building

The Free School Penig in Penig is a school in independent agencies . It existed as a state grammar school until 1998 and has existed as a free grammar school since 1999.

history

The older of the two buildings, the "White School", was inaugurated in 1867. In 1891 the "Red School" was added.

Towards the end of the Second World War, the school was used as a hospital. The lessons took place, if they took place at all, in makeshift classrooms, for example in the restaurant "Stadt Leipzig", in the basement of the town hall and in the large hall in the paper mill.

In 1950 the school became the central school for Penig and the surrounding towns. After the introduction of compulsory ten-year schooling, the first ninth grade was taught in 1956. The resulting lack of space was countered by using the district court building in Bahnhofstrasse. This resulted in Oberschule II. In 1971 what had been known as "Oberschule I" was given the name " Hans Beimler Oberschule".

In 1992 the school was converted into a high school. When the school, which had been supported by the state until then, was to be closed in 1998 due to a lack of students, the "Supporting Association Gymnasium Penig eV" was formed in November of the same year. from well-known citizens and local entrepreneurs. On November 2, 1999, the now privately owned grammar school started operations with 84 students in grades 5-9.

In 2006/2007 extensive construction work took place to implement the fire protection concept of the red main building (fire protection doors, external stairs (second escape route), new entrance area). In 2007/2008 both building facades were renovated and both roofs re-covered. As part of this work, the second building was given a new color that matches the historical color scheme. Both renovations were co-financed by the city of Penig.

In 2011 and 2017 the gymnasium was renovated and the facade design was adapted to the white school building.

The two school buildings differ in their color scheme - the main building is painted red, the second building in umber-white. There is also a cafeteria and a gym on the premises.
