The overhead line crossing of Carquinez Street was the first crossing of a larger waterway by an overhead line . It was built in 1901 for a 60 kV line for the Bay Counties Power Company to deliver electrical energy from their Colgate Powerhouse to Oakland . To do this, the line had to cross Carquinez Street , which is 840 m wide at the narrowest point at Dillon Point . The mast of the overhead line crossing on the north bank was 68 meters high , the one at the south end 20 meters. The span of the line was 1380 meters. The insulators for the overhead line crossing were supplied by the company of the American inventor Fred Morton Locke . World iconWorld iconWorld icon
