The open-air museum Ensemble Gerersdorf is a privately founded open-air museum in 1976 in the municipality of Gerersdorf-Sulz in Burgenland (Austria).

open air museum

On the basis of mostly thatched residential and farm buildings, utensils and farm equipment from the 18th to the early 20th century, a comprehensive and realistic insight into the Pannonian culture typical of the southern Burgenland region is offered.

Visitors are introduced to the way of life of farmers and craftsmen in this region at that time, be it on an independent tour of the authentically furnished buildings or on a guided tour. In addition, detailed information material provided explains the individual buildings.

There are child-friendly tours especially for schools.

The open-air museum , which was created on a private initiative and initially only had six buildings, was opened as early as 1976 under the name “Ensemble Gerersdorf”. With 34 buildings now, it has grown into the largest open-air museum in Burgenland and carries the Austrian Museum Seal of Approval .

history

The museum was built around a thatched farm from the early 19th century in Gerersdorf near Güssing , which was acquired by the founder Gerhard Kisser in 1972 and thus saved from certain decline. At the beginning, this old log house served the founder and his family as a weekend house. It quickly became apparent that there were countless other farmhouses and buildings from this period in the region, some of which were still inhabited by a dying generation of farmers or were already half derelict. There was a growing desire to preserve and revive this very attractive, anonymous rural wooden architecture. Little by little, the buildings were painstakingly dismantled by hand with the help of residents of the region, who still mastered the techniques of wood block construction and roofing with straw, and then rebuilt in Gerersdorf.

Since the first public presentation in 1976, the collection has grown year on year. In 1996, due to the founder's limited financial and time options, the museum was transferred to the specially founded association, Friends of the Open-Air Museum Ensemble Gerersdorf , which to this day has successfully ensured the operation and maintenance of the museum, largely on a voluntary basis.

The founder is still busy with the expansion and processing of the collection.
