Volunteer

The term volunteer helpers of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) is a synonym and generic term for all those civilian helpers who have been volunteering in the field as part of the consolidation and strengthening of workers-and-farmers power since 1952

participated in the German People's Police and the border troops of the GDR , also in the area of air defense in the GDR. The air raid fighters gradually became part of the civil defense of the GDR until 1978 .
